Oxford

An hour away…Oxford, city of Dreaming Spires, is the world’s first and most famous university town.

For more than 800 years, this ancient city has been the home of kings and learned scholars.  Its grand college buildings and quaint crooked backstreets have changed little today and are still frequented by leaders of the future and some of the greatest thinkers of our time.

Oxford makes an excellent day-trip from Dormy House, and there’s no need to drive all the way.  There are regular trains from Moreton-in-Marsh, using a local train that speeds you past Cotswold countryside and unspoilt villages.  Oxford has all the modern shops you’d expect and an eclectic array of bookshops where you can lose yourself for an afternoon. Or take a punt along the meandering River Cherwell.

In the summer, watch an open-air play in an ancient college quadrangle.  And in any weather, visit the Ashmolean, the oldest public museum in Britain.  Either way, you’ll return a little cleverer than you set out.
