The manager of the luxury Dormy House Hotel has celebrated 30 years at the business by returning to the kitchen to relive his first day.
David Field joined the Dormy as an 18-year-old kitchen porter in 1982. He was promoted to banqueting manager in 1988, deputy manager in 1992 and was named General Manager of the four-star hotel, near Broadway, in 2001.
To celebrate three decades at the business David returned to the kitchen yesterday (Tuesday), starting his shift at 7am by scrubbing scrambled eggs off pots and pans and making tea for the chefs during breakfast service.
After that just a few of his jobs included emptying the bins, preparing vegetables for the lunch service and cleaning down the kitchen after the chefs.
David said: “I really enjoyed my time back in the kitchen. It was hard work and certainly brought back a lot of memories, but it was exciting to be part of head chef Paul Napper’s team and to experience first-hand what a great job they do.”
Under David’s management, the Dormy has been upgraded from three-star to four-star status, has achieved a prestigious TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence and maintained a two AA rosette rating for its restaurant.
Reflecting on his 30 years in the industry, David added: “The beauty of working in a hotel is that it is never predictable so working at the Dormy still feels as exciting now as it ever has done.
“Over the years we’ve had everything, from being snowed in for three days with 40 guests to when I had to step in at the last minute and marry a couple after a mix-up with a celebrant. When things like this can happen at a moment’s notice it’s impossible for the job to become stale.
“A big thank you to all the staff I’ve worked with over the years and, of course, all the loyal guests who have eaten and stayed here and made the hotel such a great place to work.
“I’ve loved every minute of it and hope to enjoy many more years at the Dormy.”
